Now that most of the Garage Airbnb finished, I noticed the entire space was looking pretty sterile…even with the painted floors. With all white ceilings and walls, and white bathroom accents, that space was in desperate need of warmth & texture.

How Woodgrain Doors Warmed Up The Sterile Garage Airbnb
Even though this is an open studio space, I wanted the bathroom to be a totally separate space. The contractor framed the bathroom, & in order pass city inspection, I also had to frame a closet for the hot water tank. That meant I needed two doors– and it dawned on me that the doors could really help to warm up the space.
While most doors are painted & pre-fab, I wanted something that showed texture & grain– especially since my DIY wood plank ceiling project was a fail. That’s why I was so excited to partner with Woodgrain because I could choose a door that adds character and warmth!
Accenting With Woodgrain Doors
While Woodgrain has dozens of styles of doors from traditional to contemporary, I wanted something that had clean lines without a lot of accent design. I also knew I wanted a solid wood door with visible grains– without it looking rustic. With the help of their Door Finder, I picked the Woodgrain 4112 model, and here’s a tip– the type of wood you choose can really impact how it makes the space feel. I chose Douglas Fir for a clean, modern feel but a Knotty Adler would make the space feel rustic.
While these are paint or stain grade doors, I left mine as-is because they’re the perfect shade for the Garage Airbnb. The doors can also have glass inserts, chalkboard add-on, or even a fire-rated door for safety.
Since I accented with black in the bathroom, I chose simple oil-rubbed bronze hardware for the door hardware.
Adding Texture With Woodgrain
I think texture is one of the easiest ways to warm up a space, and you can’t do that with paint. Letting the woodgrain shine through– imperfections and all- really add depth & warmth. I love the contrast the wood doors have against that smooth, painted concrete floor.
The Industrial Bathroom
And just because I’m getting so excited the ENTIRE Garage Airbnb is almost finished, I thought I’d share how far we’ve come with this project!
How To Shop Woodgrain
Woodgrain supplies Home Depot with a lot of their wood products, so you probably have already bought their products and didn’t know! Did you catch my easy tutorial for cutting & installing trim & baseboards? That was all done with Woodgrain materials available at your local Home Depot. While Home Depot covers many of Woodgrain products, they don’t carry everything– but the Woodgrain website allows you to find a local dealer!
What’s Next In The Garage Airbnb
Now that the Garage Airbnb is almost done, I thought I’d share a little sneak peek of the next project I’m tackling to add warmth (& a design statement!) to the space!
Where do you think this fun pattern is going?!
