While I’ve flipped a lot of houses and completed curb appeal projects at different homes, I’ve never tackled a commercial project…until now. Our family has owned a commercial building since the early 1970s, and there have not been any updates to it since then! Iconic to the 1970s, the exterior was very dark & uninviting. After 40+ years, it was time to complete a total office makeover. This involved a lot of prep work, curb appeal projects, and of course, my favorite magic trick for any building: paint! Paint is one of the most affordable & easiest ways to create a dramatic change in any space—inside or out!
Exterior Office Makeover with Home Depot
Using Home Depot’s ProjectColor™ AppWhen I started this project, I knew I wanted to completely change the color scheme. I wasn’t sure what color scheme would look best & still maintain a professional appearance. I focused heavily on the 2020 color trends from Behr for inspiration & then utilized Home Depot’s ProjectColor™ App to find coordinating colors. To see how I used it, check out this video I made! One color in particular really stood out to me: Behr’s Graphic Charcoal.
Coordinating Behr Paint Colors
I knew I wanted to incorporate Graphic Charcoal, but I wasn’t sure about the best coordinating colors. I visited my local Home Depot store where the Behr representative just-so-happen to be working there that day. We discussed all my options, the project itself, and what I had envisioned. We looked through the Behr color index and the numerous color cards. Picking paint can be overwhelming, especially if you’re trying to coordinate colors. But the Behr representative helped tremendously! To see the process of picking the right paint, check out this video I made. Since Graphic Charcoal is such a dark & dominant color, I needed something soft to compliment it. I eventually chose Behr’s Glasgow Fog, a warm greige that complimented the dark gray I chose in Graphic Charcoal.
How To Color Match On Your Phone
Using Home Depot’s ProjectColor™ app, once I had chosen my two colors, I really explored how they’d look on the building, which paint was best for my project, and how I could order the paint directly through the app! Tip: If you find a color you love somewhere, the app allows you to take a picture and color match to the colors in the photo! You can see in this video how I color matched a plant in my house!
Painting Exterior Brick
One of the most important parts of painting exterior brick is prepping the surface and choosing high-quality paint that will withstand the elements. I had the brick professionally power-washed to create a clean surface for the paint. You can see that process here. Tip: While you’re power-washing the brick, go ahead and power-you’re your sidewalk & driveway to create a really clean finish to coordinate with your freshly painted exterior! While the paint I chose was a paint & primer combo, I chose to also use an exterior, masonry primer on the brick before applying the paint. Home Depot carries a variety of exterior primers designed for difference surfaces. I chose Behr’s Multi-Surface Stain Blocking Primer & Sealer.
After the primer had fully dried, it was time to finally add the paint! This was the most exciting part because it’s such an instant change! As with the primer, I made sure to choose an exterior-grade paint that will hold up for a long time in the elements. I chose Behr’s Ultra Stain Blocking Paint & Primer In One which worked well for not only the brick, but the cedar board & batten & metal eaves on the front elevation of the building.
The End Result
I am blown away by the change in this building! And almost all the exterior transformation was done simply with paint! A dark & dated building transformed into a sleek & modern office with loads of curb appeal…and it all started with an app on my phone!
The original brick was so dark that I wanted the bulk of the building to be much lighter. When I use a light color in a space, I like to accent with dark colors. I love the contrast of the Graphic Charcoal & Glasgow Fog. I also shopped Home Depot’s plant aisle to pick up some greenery to add some life to the exterior as well, and I love how the green plants pop against the colors!

Utilizing Home Depot’s ProjectColor app will help you to discover trending colors, order paint, hire painters, and coordinate colors! The Finishing Touches For The Office Makeover
To finish of this curb appeal project, I removed all the old & mismatched landscaping pebbles (& dead plants!). The pebbles no longer matched the new color scheme, and I wanted to create a clean look. I wanted to keep the flower beds low maintenance, so I opted to add white landscape pebbles. During the warmer months, I’ll add vibrant & colorful annual flowers.
