Modern Industrial Bathroom Transformation: One Room Challenge Week 1
When I started this monumental project of turning a garage into an Airbnb apartment, I knew I had my work cut out for me. And boy was I right! I inherited an empty shell that needed so much work! From electrical to decor and everything in between, every inch of the 400+ square feet garage needed TLC. During the One Room Challenge, I’ll be transforming this shell into a Modern Industrial bathroom.
You may remember that I partnered with Home Depot to tackle the exterior makeover. The dilapidated garage door is gone, the charming awning has been added, and new doors installed. And I’m just tickled with how the exterior turned out!
The Bathroom Before Renovations
The garage had a “toilet closet” since the structure was built by the previous owner as a wood-working shop. It was lacking a shower…and well, any design! In order to get to a blank slate for One Room Challenge, I had to bust out quite a bit of concrete to add drain lines for a shower. Once that was done, I could finally start to transform this cramped closet into a full bathroom!
Part of making a blank slate was moving the toilet down about 18 inches and moving the sink plumbing to the other side of the toilet. This was needed in order to add a shower. Since the garage sits on a slab, this was certainly not a cheap endeavor- but a necessary one! And in case you think making a shower out of nothing is new to me, I had to do the same thing at Flip 8.
Over the next six weeks, this now blank slate will have quite a bit of work done to it! From custom concrete work, drywall, tile, paint, electrical, and even custom ceiling accents, there’s a lot to add to this small space! But by the end of the 6 weeks, I’ll have a fully-functional, modern industrial bathroom!
Modern Industrial Bathroom Design Plans
What I don’t want during this project is for the bathroom to lose the feel that it’s still in a garage. I’m not going to try to create a beachy or traditional vibe with the design. Instead, I want exposed elements, mixed metals to create a modern industrial bathroom.
One thing I try to do with all my designs is to make sure they adhere to the original bones of the house (or garage in this case!). I think it makes a space feel more authentic.
Over the next 6 weeks, I’m sure I’ll encounter several hiccups, delays, and problems- I always do! But I’m excited to get this space done and ready for Airbnb guests!
